The big question for me is: How will you begin to add variety into the field? Reiser and Umemoto (the Atlas of Novel Techtonics people) suggest two possible ways: variability along a simple trajectory, or uniformity along a variable trajectory. In either case, complexity could begin to be added through experimentation in Grasshopper (attraction points can begin to vary the volume, rotation, position, etc. of your spikes) so that each unit reponds to local conditions.
